Today, the Bill Hill campaign announced the endorsements of these Alaska Native leaders from across Alaska:
“Decisions made in DC have an outsize impact on Alaska Native peoples and on our ways of life. We need a team in Congress that gets it,” said Bill Hill. “I’m deeply honored to have the support of these leaders, and I’m going to do everything I can to do right by them, and right by Alaska.”
Bill Hill is Dena’ina Athabascan and grew up in Kokhanok with a traditional Bush upbringing. He served on the board of his village corporation, Paug-Vik, for 15 years, including 10 as President. As a superintendent of the Bristol Bay Borough School District, Hill worked with regional school districts and the University of Alaska to create a Master’s program for teachers in rural Alaska to immerse them more deeply in local communities and culture. That program dramatically improved teacher retention in the district.
In Congress, Bill Hill will defend subsistence rights, stand up for tribal sovereignty and genuine government to government consultation with tribes. He will work to make sure the people whose families have lived in rural communities for generations continue to have that opportunity by bringing down the cost of housing and energy, and championing investments in basic infrastructure. He will protect access to traditional lands and cultural sites that hold the history and culture of Alaska Native people. And he will be an unrelenting champion for the economic self-determination of Native people, including defending contracting opportunities for Alaska Native corporations that are an economic engine for the state.
